South Africa - Where to from here?

As the Why Democracy? project has progressed, it's got me thinking about how loosely we have used the term "democracy" on so many occasions. Is it the end product? Is it a fantasy? Is it merely a stepping stone to better governance and civic engagement?

My disillusionment with so many things happening in South Africa at the moment makes me wonder about how the people who fought so hard for a democratic society would feel about the crises we face today.

Crime, corruption, ignorant politicians ... the list goes on. But unlike many people who continually beat the same drum about how South Africa is the next Zimbabwe, I choose to see hope. Although it might be blurred by the constant bombardment of pessimism hurled at it internally and externally, it is a remarkable nation with abundant opportunities. It is at the tip of a continent that battles to
receive the rewards it deserves for the contributions it has made to the world. But where to from here? For South Africa, democratic consolidation might be apparent but if I cannot take a train with peace of mind for my security then what have we actually achieved?

It is a problem that is solvable, but one that threatens to dismantle decades of struggle if it is not addressed. So if democracy does mean making my leaders accountable, then I guess democracy entitles me to demand change. To all South African reading this, please do the same. It is a simple right people dedicated their lives to achieving. The least we could do is to honour that.

One love.
