My name is Jaakko, 30 years old, from Finland, living in Helsinki. As a profession, now I’m unemployed but I’m mostly doing some development co-operation and studied some politics in history.
Can terrorism destroy democracy?
Yes, I’m pretty sure it can. Also the fight against terrorism can produce more terrorism and probably can destroy the democracy as well, shortly I would say yes.
What is wrong with democracy?
Yeah I think that question relates to the definition of democracy and I’m not even myself I’m not sure about the right definition for the concept. In generally in ideal case of democracy I don’t see anything which could be a defect but yeah, it’s really, really hard to implement always because there are so many different opinions, and opinions on democracy and what it should be. I really can’t answer really well this question.
Why bother to vote?
Well in the vote of representative democracy is, normally the only way to have a say or the easiest way to have a say and that’s already a good enough reason to vote I think. Yeah, I think in some other countries where there is not so strong tradition of democracy it can be dangerous also to go to vote or maybe another reasons not to vote. But in Finland I would say, it’s really recommendable to vote.
Are women more democratic than men?
That question also depends a little bit of the definition of democracy. In quite many developing countries there’s been proves that women are more responsible than women in regards of using money for example that women are…Or they use more commonly the money to drinks or gambling or stuff and women use it more well being of the whole family and or the community. The other thing is question of responsibility, question of democracy… I don’t see any prove that women are more democratic than men. It may be a cultural question also.
Is God democratic?
I’m sorry to say in that question that I don’t believe in God so I can’t say if she or he is democratic. I hope she or he is.
Is democracy fair for everyone?
Of all the political systems, I think that democracy is the fairest one. The idealistic form, at least, everybody should have an opportunity to improve their things and have a say. But of course in every system there are losers and winners but maybe social democratic mode of democracy is pretty fair.
What would make you to start a revolution?
In Finland we are not generally so revolutionary people compared to some other cultures but if there would be kind of political revolution for example if some fascist party would gain power here, then I would be quite probably one of those revolutionaries to take the power from them.
Are dictators ever good?
Well I think the dictatorship should always be avoided or try to be avoided. But maybe there are in history there some examples of a bit more enlightened dictators, probably they have been in that cases good for the people but but…like in cases of anarchy or civil war maybe there would a need a reason for or transition dictatorship but I don’t really believe in that. Normally they, even though they say that it’s only a transition phase it’s normally not, they going to keep the power as long as they can.
Can democracy solve the climate change?
In case of climate change, I don’t see that democracy is so much related on that case. But maybe, and of course on grass root level if people are really aware of climate change and how they can make an effect or how they can...anyway…affect on avoiding the climate change maybe, in that case yes. But in political decision making is, at the moment it seems, that it doesn’t depend so much if the state is democratic or not, because now the two the most polluting states are, one is not so democratic, the other at least they say that they are one of the most democratic states in the world, but there might be quite many opinions on that.
